Smoke Testing Notice

GLENEDEN SANITARY DISTRICT
SEWER SMOKE TESTING NOTICE

February 9–13, 2026
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Gleneden Sanitary District will be conducting sewer smoke testing to identify sources of Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) or water that improperly enters the sanitary sewer system. I&I increases the total volume of wastewater that must be pumped and treated, which can place unnecessary strain on the system.

Common sources of I&I include:

  • Groundwater intrusion
  • Roof gutters or downspouts illegally connected to the sewer
  • Storm or rain drains
  • Sewer cleanouts
  • Damaged or broken service laterals

During testing, non-toxic smoke is introduced into the sewer system. If a property is properly plumbed, the smoke will exit through the plumbing vent located on the roof.

To help prevent smoke from entering your home, please ensure that all plumbing fixtures including toilets, sinks, and floor drains have been recently used so that water is present in the P-traps. P-traps are the curved sections of pipe beneath sinks that create a water seal to block sewer gases.

The smoke used in this testing is not harmful to people or pets.

If smoke is observed inside your home during the testing period, please contact the District office immediately at 541-764-2475.

Thank you for your cooperation.
